But God

January 21, 2010

It’s been a long time since the last 614 blog post.  And a lot has happened–Christmas, New Year’s, ‘Pants on the Ground’, and then the earthquake in Haiti.  Needless to say,  this earthquake has captured the attention of many around the world…at least for a while.  But over time most of us who do not live in Haiti or who do not have family in Haiti or who are not directly involved with the massive relief efforts will forget…or at least ‘move on’.  And in doing so we may miss out on the real shaking that God wants to do in our own hearts (Hebrews 12:18-29).

As the ground shook in Haiti, many who survived found themselves buried under tons of rubble.  Trapped.  Unable to help themselves.  In desperate need of rescue.  Psalm 49:7 says, “Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, that he should live on forever and never see the pit.”  These people in Haiti cannot rescue themselves…and neither can we.  They need help.  And we need help.  The kind of help that only God can give.

That’s why verse 15 of Psalm 49 is so overwhelming and glorious–weightier and more immense than any amount of rubble that is crushing us and burying us.  In this verse we hear some of the most beautiful words ever to be uttered from the heart of God — “But God”.

“But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. “

I hope we will all read Psalm 49 and thank God for all the “But God”s He’s interjected in our lives despite ourselves…thank God for lifting us up out of the pit so that now whether we live or die we do so unto Him.

“For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.  For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.”
Romans 14:7-9
